Thanks, Steve! You're way smarter than I am.

Thanks Jan!  Do I have anyone out there that would like to kayak down Buffalo Bayou with me?

So now, BP is going to put trash in the Gulf to plug the oil.  Before this is over the Gulf will be overly polluted with oil and trash, me thinks!   Why don't they have a ready-made plan of what they could do in case an oil well explodes out there, not weeks later trying to figure it out?    I want to scream about all of this, but I'll just go ride HELL out of my bike instead!

Anyone know where there is some good folk music in Houston?     I REALLY need to hear some real music!

Pat, Shanna called me and I will call her back today!  She sounds just like you!

Any  person, living in Houston,  wanting to tutor some Chemistry for me, at St. Pius High School? It's the basic course.  If so, just give me a call.

FUDD'S tomorrow night!

Hoo, I'm not necessarily smarter - I just have certain experience helping folks use computers.  If someone had a question about teaching or coins, I would probably fumble around for a while, then refer them to pros like you guys so they would not waste their time with neophytes like me.     I'm just glad to help out.

Steve, I hadn't thought about it in years but you are right about that shoe store being next to the Garden Oaks Theatre and the x-ray machine. Probably all the people who worked there are long dead from over exposure to radiation. You're also right about Andy's Gang and the shoe brands. Does anyone know what Froggy's magic twanger was that he was always plunking at Andy's instruction. Maybe we don't really want to know, huh?

Hey Steve-

Wasn't that shoe store next to the theatre

called "Buster Brown Shoes" ??

Remember all the yo-yo contests ??

What a hoot,  Bernard

Wow, that discussion about the theater and the shoe store brings back a lot of memories. If I am remembering right, there was a post office on the end of the building, with the shoe store and probably another store before the Garden Oaks theater. Then on the left (north) side of the theater was a drug store....maybe it was called Garden Oaks Pharmacy (?). I remember it had a really nice soda counter....the kind you don't see any more. I also remember the Pine Forest Country Club which was kind of behind the theater.....used to go there to swim, play golf, and we even had our after prom party there.......I think it has been gone for years.....lots of old memories.

I used to live right across the street from the Garden Oaks Pharmacy and that whole shopping center.  Had my feet x-rayed a few times, too.  And, yes, the post office was at the end.  I even worked at the pharmacy one semester while attend the UofH.  I loved the soda fountain where they'd make all the sodas--cherry Coke, vanilla Coke, lime Coke, etc.  They actually had pretty good food, too.  I grew up going to the Fun Club every Saturday and even had friends over for the midnight 'scary' movies.  I think I mentioned this in a previous post, but I can't imagine parents now letting their kids go to a midnight movie and then walk (or run in our case) home at 3 a.m.  It was so much fun, though.  The "new" shopping center had a Woolworth's, Danburg (I think), an optometrist and jewelry store, among others that I can no longer recall.  And then past that was Sears and then St. Matthew's where I went to church.  And Pine Forest was behind all that.  I got to go with Carol Thamer on occasion and that was a super treat.  Pine Forest is now way out west by where my brother lives in Deerfield Village.

Talley, yes I remember the Fun Club on Sat. mornings.....I think it only cost a dime to get in then, not bad for a full morning of entertainment. I was not aware that Pine Forest had moved, I thought it was just sold for the land and then torn down. That Sears has been there forever too....I used to get on the bus near Stevens Elem. and ride up to the Sears just to look around......seems like the bus ride was only a dime too back then. The world has become a different place since those days....unfortunately, not all for the better.  Take care all.

Robby, how long will you be there?  I'm heading to Tucson Saturday for a long weekend.  Unfortunately, my trip is to visit a friend who's dying, so it won't be a pleasure trip for me.  Heard it's going to be in the 90s by the weekend--that will be a shock to my system.

I too remember the Fun Club days at the Garden Oaks. I also remember as we got older riding the bus down town with friends. Going to the Majestic, Metropolitan or Loew's to a movie, James Coney Island for a hot dog and Woolworth's for for an ice cream cone. I'm not sure what all that extravagant living cost but it wasn't much.

Well, those of you that weren't there missed another good time at Fudds last night. Those of you who haven't been are missing a fun evening. So you better come on out. I don't want to embarrass anyone but I may have to start asking specifically why your not attending. it's not like we want you to tithe!

Just keep on dancing,

Rich

Rats!  Another frost advisory up here in Albany NY.  It is supposed to be in the low 30's again tonight.    We were spoiled by a few weeks of balmy weather and I put many of my porch plants out, then had to scurry to bring them in again.  You never know what the weather might be in '4 seasons' country!

Robby, you are right....that is not the real Tucson....but it is a great area and nice place to be this time of year.....enjoy it.....glad you haven't had to show your papers. Not sure how often you get there but sometime you might be interested in going to the Titan Missile Museum, if you have not already seen it.....it is not far outside Tucson. Here is some info if you are interested:

http://www.titanmissilemuseum.org/

Talley, get ready for it to be pretty warm....we are counting the days until the first 100 degree day...it could come any time, but if you are only here for the weekend, you will probably escape it.....enjoy it. Tucson is actually a few degrees cooler than Phoenix due to higher altitude....but not too much different....sorry to hear about your friend there. Have a good weekend...stay safe.

Stevie Ray,

My first wife and I are headed for your neck of the woods next week.  Please hold the cool weather for us.  Looking forward to see the New England area in the spring rather than the fall as we typically do.

Steve, we actually had four seasons this year and last. We had a fall ,winter (two snows) spring and summer is arriving. By Albany standards it wasn't a cold winter but compared to the last 10 or so it was. It actually felt pretty good. Even though we have hot summers, it's normally not hot enough to fry your hand on your car door handle like in Phoenix, right John? I've heard about the winters in Buffalo. Is Albany as bad?

05/13/10 06:17 PM #611

Stephen Ray Puckett

No, Richard.  We don't have Winter weather here in Albany as bad as it can get around Buffalo.  They get 'lake effect' snow where the winds blow West-to-East, picking up moisture from the Great Lakes, then dumping it on land which is where Buffalo is.  We DO get some of it even this far East, but not often.  A bigger concern is "nor'easters" where a big storm sits offshore around Boston or so.  The winds flow counter-clockwise, picking up moisture and then dumping it when it is over land.  Some of that will reach as far West as Albany where the winds come out of the Northeast.  The most I've seen lying on my yard was about 5 feet after a week or so of on-and-off snowing.  Many Albanians had not seen that much snow at once.  My 165-foot driveway was shoveled out which caused the sides to be several feet higher than 5'.  It was like a snow canyon where you could not see over the top:  It was like that for a week or so and then slowly got lower.

I was talking recently with some family that live in Virginia.  They told me that the schools there used to let schoolkids take smoke breaks.    I was astounded! Did our schools 'enable' schoolkids for this kind of drug use as well?  I don't recall anything like that.  Thank goodness I never smoked.  Besides my health and the expense, I didn't think it looked that great.     Well, I must confess that I smoked a pipe for a week and then one time the 'stuff' at the bottom ran down my throat - I could not get rid of that fast enough.    That was it for me!   Dad smoked cigars   & pipes for years, finally giving up in his early 30's and promptly gaining 20+ pounds!

There are no words for Stephen's postings!  I love them!  The dive in the frozen lake, was so funny and the Mona Lisa dragging on a "cig".......Yes, you are one talented fella Stephen and I'm sure others enjoy these entertaining posts as much as I do!

Okay fellow Waltripians, it's time to get your little fingers moving again and typing some messages. Remember we're all at the stage of life.  . .use it or lose it! So limber up your phalanges and get to it. Has anyone else read the book Blue Zones? It's really interesting. It's about some of the areas that have been identified as having the longest lived people. In other words a much higher percentage of centenarians than other populations. The areas are Okinawa, Sardinia, Costa Rica and Loma Linda, CA. One of the traits that they've identified is that these long lived people have a very tight bond with their family and extended family support groups. Hello, this is one of your extended family support groups. Come on in and participate. You'll benefit by it. It won't be shocking to your system like that guy in Steve's message who jumps off the pier and goes through the ice. Some of you  might be wondering what might be similar between three small isolated places and Loma Linda, CA? you'll have to participate to find out. I'll let you know down the line.

Keep on dancing (yep this is good for you too),

Rich

Don't know is everyone is aware (by email I received) that Richard Brimberry has and is bravely fighting cancer.  He is listed on the Waltrip 64 website and I believe the message came from them.

Please take a moment and visit the website and/or leave a message for Richard.  His sister, Cherry, let us know.

For those of you not registered on the '64 website, if you'd like to send Richard Brimberry a note or card his address is: 1155 Bluewater, Canyon Lake, TX 78133. From what his sister Cherry says he has had a tough ten years fighting cancer. Take a minute and let him know you're thinking of him. I knew Richard all the way back in Cub Scouts. I think my mother was his Den Mother. I rented my first office from his dad Elton.  What a community Oak Forest has been.

Take care everyone,

Rich

Richard Brimberry was part of our class, not the class of '64.  He graduated mid-year, but he's in our yearbook and on our class website.  So sorry to hear about him.

Re the number of posts on our site versus '64.  First of all, their site has been active longer than ours.  Second, quantity does not equate quality!!  Of course, it would be great to read posts from lots of other folks who haven't been active, but I'm enjoying the heck out of reading what's been put out there.  I like the variety--not all coming from one source.

Now we just need to encourage our classmates to sign up for the reunion.  Looks like not very many have committed.
