Well, I think that our class is not fortunate to have a "Beau-funny" a grass-roots author who pulls comments and conversation out of us as easy as candy.....anyone want to step up to the plate, that has the time to control the message forum?  Go ahead and try, we'll all for ya!  (Suppose we could copy -plagurize?) beau's comments each day for subj. matter, but we will need 4-6 steady people to make it go.

This isn't a competition but it would be good to just hear from  people regularly. Our class has a bunch of bright intelligent people in it. I think they would have a lot to say on many different subjects.  So as Rob Wallis mentioned a few pages ago , just trying to prime the pump. I don't think we need to post Beau's commentary over here.  Not many folks have the time to compose the lengthy compositions he does. He's got the time and enjoys it immensely. It seems with the reunion coming up increasing participation would be good. I sent my registration in yesterday. Adios muchachos.

OK....not wanting to feel guilty, I figured it was time to jump back in here. Well, today, May 21st, marked the first 100 degree day in 2010 here in Phoenix. It actually arrived a bit later than normal, but we are not complaining about that. There is a front coming through this weekend that will drop the temps back into the 80's, but that will be short lived. By Memorial Day weekend, 100+ will be the daily norm. Believe it or not, our pool water is still uncomfortably cold, but that problem should go away pretty quickly. For those of you there in Houston, I should add that the relative humidity is somewhere at or below 10%....normal for us this time of year.....so 100 doesn't feel like 100. Not much else new to report from here in the Southwest. I hope all of you have a nice weekend.....take care all.

-John

So John, what is a comfortable pool temperature in Phoenix?  I visited there a few years ago and spent the evening at a pool party.  The air temperature was around 90 F and the water was 78F.  I was the only one who would go in that 'too-frigid' water and I am not particularly a pool person.

It was nice, though, not to be in a crowded pool.

Stephen, it is not so much the water temperature as it is the low humidity....once you get into the water and stay down in it, you don't feel too cold.....but wow...at 10% humidity, when you get out you feel like you are in Alaska in mid winter From Memorial Day to Labor Day is what we call the "swim season"....but there are those that say we are nuts. There is a similar problem in that by late July or early August, the pool water temp can be in the 90s...and that isn't too refreshing if you are trying to cool off. There is actually a pool "cooler" now that you can buy that recirculates the pool water and cools it off.....but I don't think the "problem" is bad enough to justify that. In mid-July we get our annual monsoon season....the humidity then gets up to around 50% (yes, I know, that is nothing compared to Houston humidity, but 50% is HIGH for here). We get most of our rain during that monsoon season, which lasts from mid July into September....then back to the normal low humidity. The average annual rainfall here is only about 7 inches, and a good deal of that comes during the monsoon season. OK....I've probably given a lot more AZ weather info than anyone here wants to hear......hope everyone is having a nice weekend.

Love those pictures Stephen!  Have you ever thought  of making a bathroom book full of funny pictures or writing comedy situations?  I think you would be great at both and I definitely would buy your book!

Hey Jennie, there was a good article in the Chronicle yesterday about boating on Buffalo Bayou. If you want them let me know and I'll send you the websites of the tour groups listed. Sounds pretty interesting. You can do everything from kayaking to just riding on a pontoon boat. Apparently the bayou is pretty clean. Not like the '70s when they had an annual canoe race called the Reeking Regatta.

Did anyone else happen to see the show on PBS last night about the Atlanta Aquarium? Really an amazing place. Looks like it would be worth several visits. Some of the behind the scene machinery is kind of mind boggling. If memory serves they have over 8M. gals that is recirculated and filtered every 80-90 minutes. They have veterinary staff and techs working 24/7 taking care of the sea animals. I really like to aquarium at Cannery Row in CA and the Corpus Christi on is very good so I'm going to have to go to Atlanta and see how it stacks up. Has anyone else already seen it?

Only

two more days of tutoring and then SUMMER vacation.  OHHHHH how I LIVE for SUMMER!

Yes, please do send the information Richard and thanks!  BUT my other question was, Are there any brave souls out there that want to face this challenge with me???????

I rode my bike to T.C. Jester park on Sunday and they are revamping it with a new child friendly water-park and renovated pool, a small amphitheater, and increased parking.  It's going to be nice, the city is putting a LOT of money into the project.

Jennie - It is easy to adjust the picture size once uploaded.  First, congrats on getting the photo in your post.  After you upload the photo, you will see some info to the side.  For example, the squirrel photo below is width 150.  You can make the photo wider or taller by playing with the numbers but I usually let the height alone and only adjust the width.  I like to get the resulting picture so you can see some detail but not be too big - generally 100-200 wide.  Hope this helps.  If you want, you can edit your post, delete the photo (ctl + x), upload it again, play with the width, etc.  then celebrate with a brewski, or 2, or...

Your old friend, Steve

Steve, I love your beer drinking squirrel. Very cool.

Jennie, I'll get you the info on bayou tours.

The project Jennie mentioned is going to have a total expenditure of $1.6 million according to The leader. They just spent $150,000 for a new fenced dog park. T.C. Jester Park is really used a lot by the citizens, 2 & 4 legged.

  • Tour de Hood: The volunteer group hosts periodic free boat trips on Buffalo Bayou. Planning for a June tour is under way. tourdehood.org or 713-899-1961.
  • Leisure Learning: For a fee, the adult education organization offers guided tours. llu.com.
  • Texas Parks and Wildlife Department: Find out how to get your own canoe or kayak on the water at tpwd.state.tx.us/fishboat/boat/paddlingtrails/coastal/buffalo_bayou/index.phiml
  • If you want to contact the reporter who wrte the article her name is Tara Dooley. tara.dooley@chron.com

I hope this helps. I would consider going on on of these deals, just depending on details. Is anyone else interested? The pictures looked like it would be a beautiful photo op.

Hey all-

I lived on Chamboard 1948 to 1962 and moved to the

corner of Chippendale and T.C. Jester in April, 1962.

Gary VanDeventer was my next door neighbor. Anybody

talked to him lately? He nomonated me to join DeMolay

in the Heights. What a wonderful experience. I am so pleased

that T.C. Jester Park is coming. Thanks for keeping us posted.

Hey Bernard, we share another commonality.  I lived at 1162 Chamboard, I think in 1962.  Neighbors included Kay Zigal, Vernon and big bro. Ellis, Barbara porter, Norman ? Johnny Papagallos, Donna Surrey.

Mornin to all you fine Waltripians. BJ, a couple of months ago I was in the Collier Library on Pinemont. One of the librarians' last name is VanDeventer. I asked if she is related to Gary. She is his sister-in-law. I haven't talked to him but apparently Gary is a doctor living in LaJolla, CA. That's all I know. What a wealth of knowledge huh?

Stephen, which free program should we download to get cute movable Smiley's?  I'm scared to download stuff I don't know.  I have an Apple.

Thanks!

Hey all-

Kay- this is extraordinary ! I lived at 1325 Chamboard.

My neighbors were Ricky Fitzgerald, Robin Trimble, Robert Hagan,

and a bunch of younger children that would be classes of

Waltrip 67,68 etc. My brother Jeff and sister Shirley ended up

graduating from Lamar High School because of parental issues (divorce).

Such is our wonderful life.  BJ

Good morn all-

To Linda W, Linda M and Suzie May: Ladies, thank you so much for all of your hard

work on keeping this website up and going. From those of us who live far from Houston,

this Forum is like our little Fudd's get-together every day. I get a fresh laugh from both

the 1964 and the 1965 Forums each morning. Thanks again, BJ

Kay-

Got a question of Chamboard trivia...

Remember the house at the end of Chamboard by the Black Jr. High

School?

It had a bomb shelter built in the yard by the driveway. It was

either owned by Ed and Al Kuehn's family or they lived next door.

I always wanted to see inside of it.  Never got to...    BJ

Oh, I don't know.  I lived on the Chamboard ib SHEPARD pARK pLAZA.

Linda Webster

BJ

Ed & Al's family lived in the house in the center and his grandparents lived on one side or the other. I think the grandparents lived on the Overhill side.

It's a georgeous day at Lake Travis today, but I'm sure this weekend will find it packed with tons of people.

Have a Great Memorial Weekend to all---

05/29/10 04:07 AM #640

Bernard Brady

Thanks Linda-

I should have known that you would remember. Your memory

is wonderful. Did you remember the bomb shelter??

To All: have a great weekend and pray that the BP oilrig repair

efforts are successful. If they are not, This spill could have serious

consequences for Texas, the GOM states, and then onward to and

even past the State of Florida. This is so big a problem that even the

media is unable to tell the entire truth. Our God is in charge of the results...

Faithfully yours, BJ

Talley Hudson

It's 52 and raining here in the beautiful Northwest!  I am heading to Boise in a little while to get my Grandma fix.  It would normally be much warmer there, but it's not.  I'm not going to debate whether it's manmade or part of the earth's normal cycle, but the weather is definitely changing.  But I have much to be grateful for, so a little cool rain doesn't really matter.  And it keeps my yard green!

To all, have a safe Memorial Day weekend.  Let's not forget why we have a holiday this Monday.  Thanks to all our veterans!

05/29/10 05:46 PM #642

Richard Meek

Talley, we'll probably see 52 before too long, about Nov. I'd guess. If we go through the summer without a hurricane that's a good one. I'll deal with the heat and humidity.  A good summer would be one with no hurricane, good health and an improving economy! Boy, do I have an amazing grasp of the obvious or what?

I hope all you Waltripians are having a great holiday! Looking forward to the reunion in Sept. Also Fudd Tuesday coming up. Plan on attending both. You'll be amazed how good it is for you.

Keep on dancing,

Rich

Thanks Steve, I now have Janne and I playing the ukulele in Hawaii!  Ha! Ha!  We can't go this year, she's buying a hot tub, BUT next year I'm hopeful!!!!!

I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday and offering thanks to all our soldiers.  Went to the Veterans yesterday with my Mother to place some flowers on my Dad's wall.  So, so, so many new graves since last year.  The markers always remind me of soldiers standing at attention on watch, row, after row, after row.  It is an honor for me to go there and I always feel so much pride for those who are there.

I'm off for a great bike ride now.
