Janne Semeyn Boone's son, Jimmy, the racecar photographer, just had major surgery on his leg bone by the hip. Very painful. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. He has a disease where the bone dies.

My daughter and son-in-law are taking me to see my arthritic folk hero Bob Dylan. I saw him a few years ago and he never moved from one position. Anyway, I can't wait. John Mellencamp and Willie Nelson will be playing also at Dell Diamond.

Peggy, I hope you and you husband's wedding renewal is awesome. What a blessing to have your family and friends there to share all the special moments together. Enjoy!

I hope more '65 people come to the August meeting at Fudd's. It really is fun!

Yep....THIRTY year anniversary vow renewal.
About 170 attended. It was a terrific ceremony.
Much 'laughter thru tears' during the first part,
then down to serious business of reaffirmming our
vows of love to God and each other. The music was
'Bridge over troubled water', 'Colour my World', 'Unchained Melody', You Light up my Life', and 'The Lord's Prayer'--two beautiful dancer, dancing
to the Lords Prayer'. It was awesome.
I'll post pics soon. Red roses was the theme and two ladies dressed in red, me & granddaughter dressed in ivory.Guys wore black suit, white shirt, & red tie.
It was gorgeous.
Now we are busy getting ready for our 'honeymoon' to Alaska, V.I.P. balcony suite.
I am excited.

Robby,
Tam and I had a great discussion yesterday on my folk hero Bob Dylan. His show at Dell Stadium in Round Rock was Very disappointing. He sang only a few songs I even recognized in the Very long 1st set. He stayed on the right side of the stage only moving from the keyboard to play his guitar. He never said a word. Yes, he is a legend, but Tam and I agree his concert days should be done, especially if he doesn't give sing his old stuff. We left at 10:30, more from boredom than anything else. Later, I heard his encore had three of his older great songs. By then many, many people had left though. John Mellancamp was Awesome. I didn't get to see much of Willie Nelson, good, but just Willie, laid back, as you said. Dylan's Rainy Days and Hwy 61 very good, but that was it.

Peggy and Rick, be sure and take the helicopter ride to the top of a glacier. It is exhilarating!

Hawaii was great. Janne and I had a blast, and no I didn't drink a "Maui Owwi" but other delicious drinks. We had some uncomfortable situations, like being stuck in a 6 hour traffic block, due to a forest fire crossing the main road in Maui. We hung our wet clothes all over the inside of the car to dry, because they started souring in the trunk. We watched a DVD on Janne's computer, Vernon, Florida. If you haven't seen the movie you might want to....It is 90 minutes long and we laughed so hard in our clothes draped car, rendering similar scenes for the movie we were watching. Wet spots were spotted on the passenger side of the road for miles and miles as we drove forward after waiting the 6 hours, you can imagine what they were, can't you?
On our boat snorkeling trip I became stuck on the slide, my legs all entangled within the handles at the top of the slide. I had climbed up backwards due to my knees, turning to slide down. That's when the entanglement happened. Janne is in the freezing cold water cracking up laughing. The scuba diving guide had to climb up and help disentangle me, which was more than awkward for me, but obviously not him, he was enjoying every second in front of all the people watching. Finally, I was free and it was the best slide of my life.

Janne and I decided late one afternoon, outside of Kona, at this little state park to snorkel. We rented the equipment and set off for the beach. The problem was that with flippers on me, Janne had to lead me backwards out into the water. This wave hit me at the shallowest point and I flipped crunching Janne's shin with my flipper, she still has the knot, and I was pulled out into the water. Janne was knocked down and COULD NOT get up out of the waves hitting her on the beach. She rolled all over the beach for a very long time, trying to get up. My turn to laugh! We didn't have any life preservers and in very deep water. It was a stupid idea, but it was fun and turned out okay, since we didn't drown.

If anyone wants a fun time go to Hawaii. We stayed in Bed and Breakfast places at $75 each a night. We had our own cottages, beautifully furnished, with the most awesome views!

Jennie:

Sounds like you guys take the "road less traveled" when you go snorkeling.

You probably know about this spot, but if you are on the Big Island, there is a snorkeling spot on the east side of the island called Two Step. It is right next to the Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historic Park (I had to look that up of course) and basically you step onto a ledge into about 1-2 feet of water and then go right into the deep end from the ledge. It was the best snorkeling spot we found on the island that did not entail taking a boat ride to get to it. I highly recommend it for the snorkelers in the crowd.

I'll check with Janne, but I'm almost positive that was the spot. Oh my gosh, it was awesome there. Can you imagine Janne rolling back and forth as I went right into very deep water?

I can't wait to see everyone tomorrow night. I would love to see more of our '65 class. The '64 class come "in mass". Pat Wilcox and I lived on the same street, Cheshire. We always have a laughing time reminiscing. It's a great time for a group of people wanting to have a good memory sharing experience. So come on and enjoy the night, you won't regret it!

Jennie Anderson (Dylan)

I so wish more people would share on this message forum. I read the '64 site and those guys can be really funny with their memories of places in our old neighborhood.

Robby, I'll believe you will be there when I actually see you there. In fact, I mistook Lynn Roth for you the other night. Walter has attended, but "Where's Robby?"

Has anyone seen Julie/Julia yet? Wasn't it amazing how they made Meryl Streep appear so tall. She said it was mostly done by allusions. I really related to her stature and am so glad I, eventually, learned to love my own.

Are there any bike riders out there that would like to ride around Houston some early some Saturday or Sunday? We don't have to go fast!

Jennie

Mistook me for Lynn Roth? I may forgive you someday. ha ha

Lynn has a lot more hair than me….and I hear he colors the hell out of it.

I really do hope to make the Sep 8 Fudd event…

Julia height/stature “illusion” does that translate to “telephone books”

I saw a Julia clip, she was flipping something and it didn’t flip well, it crashed and burned...she said something like ”what happens in the kitchen, stays in the kitchen, your guests will never know” as she mashed it back into shape with her fingers….It made me chuckle...

Dan Aykroyd did a pretty good Julia on SNL

Always up for a weekend bike ride…half fast is fine, fast is fine too …brunch, donuts, croissants…lunch along the way…maybe a little vino

Hey, Robby and Jennie.

I wish I lived in Houston 'cause I'd be on that bike ride with y'all. Don't let Jennie talk you into having you ride on her handlebars like I did all the way down Mount Haleakala in Hawaii. Now that was a bike ride!

Hey Jennie,

I saw Julia/Julie last weekend and loved it. Meryl Streep is my all time favorite and she had me totally convinced that she was Julia Child. I remember watching those old black and white Julia cooking shows with my Mom. She had the cookbook "Mastering the Art of French Cooking"; however, I don't know what happend to it after she passed away. I wish I still had it.

Robby,
I'm good to go bike riding. Should we go sometime on a Saturday or Sunday in mid or late September, the 19th or 26th? I can meet anywhere to start, and a funky lunch place with WINE or very cold water, at the end of our ride sounds good. Come on fellow Waltrip people, join us. We're not going to ride like the MS 150 or anything, just a nice ride in our "beloved" city! They rent bikes in Houston all over the place and I have a bike rack to help transport one bike, along with my own bike. I will post our invitation on the other Waltrip sites too. See if either of those dates fit, or choose another, and I'm in! Hopefully, it won't be so blazing hot!

Leah, how is your broken hand?

Peggy, Are you back from Alaska yet?

Has anyone ever canoed down the bayou, that sounds like a fun thing to do too!

Jennie:

Several of us, including Mike Germany, went canoeing down Buffalo Bayou in the days before any of that stuff was concreted over. In retrospect, it was kind of like canoeing in a large petri plate. I am amazed none of us came down with any really exotic tropical disease.

The bike ride sounds like a great idea.

Tam,
Come in and join us for the bike ride. I remember when Candy Landis and my brother, Joe and I used to wade in White Oak Bayou when it was low. Joe used to skin snakes on our patio that he caught down there. It was so disgusting, but my Mother said he could do it. Playing by the bayou seemed so much fun then! Any other bayou memories of anyone?

Way to go Jennie--

Let's get some interaction on the forum no matter where you live. Even if you can't participate it's always fun to put in your 2 cents. But come to think of it mine probably isn't worth 2 cents but whatever, it's still fun to read.

I hope to see a bunch of people(old & new) at Fudd's on the 8th of September. Also, I hope alot of our class is planning to attend the '64 Reunion, since we don't know who will be here next year. That's not to sound morbid it's just we aren't promised tomorrow.

Keep it going Jennie.

Amen! Linda, not to your 2 cents, b/c it is as valuable as anyone else's, but to the suggestion that everyone must have something to contribute about something in their lives, before it is over.....

Jennie, I don't have a bayou story of my own. Since I lived 2 block from Shepherd, I don't think that I knew that there was a bayou anywhere near by. My mom did have a bayou story. She retold it each time we went to pick up my grandmother from the Southern Pacific Station downtown. When we would pass the cement platform on the bank of the bayou, she would explain that there used to be a cable car that went across the bayou to get to downtown. I don't know whether she once rode it or had just heard the story & was passing it on.

I do have a "ditch" story. When it rained, the ditch dip in our driveway would fill with water. The Barnette family lived behind us. Chip & I were about the same age so maybe that's why we are in this story together. We swam in the driveway ditch only once. I don't know what his mom did, but I defintely know what mine did. She paddled me with her Daniel Green houseshoe. Not only did we get really dirty, but we also had exposed ourselve to the possibility of getting Polio. We were just kids; what did we know! Obviously, this was before we were Salk Vaccine Pioneers, that means before the mid 1950's.

Jennie asked for bayou stories... Here's one titled 'How Parents Get Grey Hair'. I would go to White Oak Bayou and explore, usually with buddies. It's a wonder we all didn't get snakebit, etc. Anyway, one time I was there with a friend in a plaster cast up to his knee, on crutches (I know, I know: Stupid), and I was carrying a small pick. He suddenly fell against me and knocked me to the ground, the pick knocking out my right front tooth. It hurt a lot but I just jammed it back into place. Later it was sore but that went away in a few days. I did not tell The Parents or they might fuss at me. (I know, I know...) Things went OK for months and then I had my periodic dentist appointment. The dentist wanted to know how in the world I now had a hole in the front of my tooth. Uh, oh. I probably had GUILT written across my forehead but after stammering, told him the whole story. He checked it out, said it was fine, and that I had done the best possible thing at the time but really should have seen a dentist ASAP to make sure it healed properly. He then went and told my poor mom who was sitting innocently in the waiting room. Apparently he did not badmouth me too bad but mom was clearly not happy - neither was dad, later that night. Yes, I fixed the immediate problem. No, I should not have kept quiet about it.

Stephen, was that dentist the local Oak Forest dentist on the 2nd floor of the Oak Forest Bank, Dr. Creamer? He was nice, but either my Mother or Dr. Creamer didn't believe in numbing teeth for cavities. I still hate anything to do with dental procedures. I still tightly grip the chair until my hands have no feeling and what about all those years of spitting blood, how nasty was that?

Suzy, those houseshoes hurt, but not as much as my Dad's belt. OMG he was an ace when it came to that form of discipline. He was in the Navy and a Basketball Coach. You know, that "after the war" mentality, where we were always told to, "Shape UP or Ship Out"! Who heard of CPS back then or for that matter, in cases, now? I never heard the story about the cable crossing, but I'm going to find some pictures of what it looked like. How cool would that have been back then, especially, when the bayou was out of its banks?
Polio vaccine. I had polio before the vaccine and still had to take those "3" shots when Salk developed it. Death from drowning and disease right out our front doors in those swollen ditches stirs memories of when we used to hammer nails into boards to look like ships and float them in front of our houses, w/o any parental supervision!

Any additional bikers yet?

Swimming in the driveway dip brought back many memories including the "wait till your father gets home" memory that is still a bit painful to recall. As I recall it was your idea.

08/21/09 07:59 PM #165

Janne Semeyn (Boone)

Suzie and Chip,

I too have many fond memories of the "driveway dip". After it would rain, my sister and I would go out and hunt for crawdads. We'd catch as many as we could and then let them go. I remember getting pinched more than once. I also remember having my friends' parents not wanting to drive into the dip after a big rain in fear their cars would either stall out or the brakes wouldn't work. So instead I would be left on the side of the road to jump the sometimes 8 to 10 foot distance across the ditch water to get to my house. In the rain. Ha!!

Robert (Robby) Wallis

life cheated me, we didn't have a driveway dip...I remember seeing other kids frolicing in their water filled DDs as we drove past in our 56 Ford....I went home heartbroken and cried myself to sleep... it just wasn't fair

You guys are all nuts! It's so much fun to read all the exchanges. I, too, was a patient of Dr. Creamer. I believe I read that his son died a year or two ago. Slipped on a dock or something and got the flesh-eating disease. Awful!

Guess that's not a cheery note to add to the exchange, is it? Is it still hot, hot, hot down there? We're having a pretty darned nice summer up here in Seattle (for a change).

Does anyone have any idea about when we might be having our 45th reunion?

yeah, the frigin heat and incessant scream of the circadas has got us all a bit nut-tay down here...Dr Creamer..me too...the thought that you and I may have shared the same dental tools kind of excites me in a kinky sort of way..ha ha.....Yes! let's do this 45th reunion asap, we ain't getting any younger, and, you never know when you might be strolling on a dock and whoops.. robby
