Didn't ANYBODY go to LuLu Stevens Elementary?? I know Stan Shoemaker & Terry Robertson did, and I'm thinking Barbara Pate & Cheryl Hammock. I have NO pictures
from school. My mom's house burned down & I didn't get a thing. Good lesson, though. I now divide all my daughters & my pictures up and have her take some to her home.
If someone has Stevens pics, please post them.

I scanned some newspaper clippings and documents that you may find interesting concerning Waltrip: http://picasaweb.google.com/spuckett65/WaltripClippingsAndDocuments?authkey=Gv1sRgCION3tSPrZON0gE&feat=directlink You will have to copy and paste the URL (e-address) in your Internet browser box to access this web album. Write me if you have difficulty. Enjoy!

Per tex-mex fare, I remember our family eating at Felix's and loving it. We also sometimes ate at Monterey House (for a quick meal, usually brought home), Spanish Village, etc.

I see Spanish Village is still around: http://www.spanishvillagerestaurant.com/

I was never a big fan of El Chico. The closest one to Houston is now Huntsville: http://www.elchico.com/location_cities.php?st=TX

Felix's closed last year but may open in a different guise. See interesting articles at: http://blogs.houstonpress.com/eating/2008/03 /felix_closes_after_60_years_in.php

I've been blessed to have had good tex-mex fare in both Portland OR and here in Albany NY. Thank goodness!

Hello, everyone. I had a techie friend help me re-scan my class photos from Oak Forest which are on my profile. The resolution is much improved and I think you will enjoy them even more now. Make sure you let me know if you recognize anyone that I don't have named. I would love to be able to fill in the missing spots.

Hey, Robbie. I'm sure you were in my fifth grade class with Mrs. Sievert, and I think you may have been in at least two other classes. Let's play "Where's Robbie?". Janne

Janne Semeyn (Boone)

So, Robbie, you found yourself in all of my pictures. Now are you going to let me know where you are in each of them so I can post it, or is it now my job to "Find Robbie". I do remember what we called Dr. Dishrag, oops Dr. Dishron.

The Olympian was Mr. Cassell (sp?) who was soooooooooo cute. I was in his history class when we got news of John Kennedy's death. He was very shaken. I think Mr. Cassell got his medal in some kind of track and field event - long distance running? Do I win anything??

For those of you who are into cars, my son (James Boone) has taken up photography as a hobby and had a photo published in a online magazine, l'endurance. The magazine covers endurance racing throughout the world, but its focus is on the Le Mans series. His photo is on the second to last page and the publisher also gives my son accolades in his column at the beginning of the magazine. Here's the address - http://www.lendurance.co.uk/issues/Issue2.pdf

Enjoy!

Robbie, Janne and anyone else interested, I had Mr. Cassell's too! Oh my gosh, he was the most gorgeous man. I loved his class so much b/c I could just sit and stare at him. He ran in the Pan American Games, during the summer and I watched his race on T.V. I can't remember if he won or not, but I can remember screaming like crazy! I also loved having Mr. Leonard, does anyone remember him? He saw this guy Stickney electrocuted in Huntsville and described each detail. He was a law student while teaching, I believe. I wanted to study criminology, and did until my Dad made me switch to teaching. Does anyone else have any teacher stories or remember either one of these guys? Robbie, sounds like Janne is still trying to find you.

I received this message from Betty Geiser this morning.

His appointment with the Surgeon is tomorrow and May 22 he sees the Cardiologist.

Hope the doctors think Allen is doing as well as Allen thinks he is doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Betty"

I believe Mr. Cassell's first name is Olan. His event was the 400 meter dash. He won his gold medal running one leg of the 4X100 meter relay in the olympics. He was an executive with the with the AAU until he retired.

Correction on that previous email. Mr. Cassell won his olympic medal in the 4 X 400 meter relay.

I wish we could find him or any of our other teacher's who are still alive to communicate with them, too. You're correct, it was Olan and he wasn't that much older than us.

Jennie, I had Mr. Leonard for Civics. I remember he was such a good teacher, very personable but VERY hard. He stopped teaching at Waltrip after the first semester of our senior year. We all thought that we would be on easy street for the second semester because what were the odds that we would get anyone harder than him. . . Well, Mrs. Lord replaced him and she had taught at the University of Houston. Lord, what an apt name! Mr. Leonard didn't hold a candle to her as far as being a demanding teacher! Whew, I still break out in a cold sweat thinking about her.

Janne, you are so correct. She was the hardest teacher I ever had or hope to ever have. Does anyone else remember MISS LORD ? The sweetest was Mr. Walsh in 8th grade math. I think I cheated in his class b/c he didn't seem to care, he was such a gentle soul. I'm feeling guilty now.

I just came back from Fuddrucker's. It was so much fun seeing everyone and this time we had name tags which took the mystery part away, if you still had the "eyesight" to read the names.

Linda, I'm sorry you weren't there b/c you have been feeling ill. I pray you are better soon.

Robby-

I just ran into Coach Skains at a funeral for his cousin who happened to be our neighbor on Thornton in Oak Forest(where my Mom and my younger sister) still live for over 50 years. The service was in February and my brother-in-law Ted Jordan t/w him and found out he is retired and lives in San Antonio. He still looks as young as he did 40+ years ago.

Jennie-

Did anyone take pictures at Fudd's? Thks for your kind thoughts.

05/13/09 08:06 PM #108

Jennie Anderson (Dylan)

Linda, yes, Tommy Britton was taking pictures all over the place. I'm sure he'll share, if he's asked. I hope you are feeling better.

Robby, that was so neat to read Mr. Cassalls words. Thanks for finding him. I hope you shared with him that some of the girls were quite taken with him.

Reading all these responses has been most enlightening. HMMMMM. Do you think the world was really ready for us because I know we were definitely ready to spread our wings. It's been great catching up on all who have participated in this great website. As an update for me, I broke my right wrist on St.Patrick's Day this year...that's right about 9 weeks ago. Nope, it wasn't alcohol induced....just klutziness. So, one plate and 3 pins plus a 3" scar later, I'm finally back in business. I've been able to resume my upper body workouts and discovered I hadn't lost as much strength as anticipated. And, I'm planning on going to the driving range this afternoon if our Terminix guy will hurry up and finish his spraying. If you've never experienced broken bones or stitches, don't add it to your "bucket list"...;-) As for TX-Mex, our favorite restaurant in the WHOLE world in Baby Acapulco in Austin. And, it's not so much the food (although the food is great), but, it' the frozen margaritas...especially the coconut ones. I had to go into training to be able to drink two and the training was wonderful. Take care and enjoy the summer. We're just getting in mid 70s and low 80s...wonderful. MM

Hello Margaret,
If anyone can make good mex. food AND margaritas, I would sure put my money on Austin, TX...my sis likes the Margaritas too. Too much sugar for me since I'v been a diabetic Type 1 for 43 yrs. now. I like an occasional Marg. as well with sis.

As for the weather we are having a rare cold snap here, with temps down to 54 and day tems 76, warming up though. I live in the Brazos Valley and it's especially know for it's humidity! UGGH.

I found the Oak Forest school song:

We’re from Oak Forest

The best school of all;

We’ve got the pep

Even though we are small.

We love to sing

So the whole world can hear;

Our song of praise

For the school we love so dear.

From Kindergarten

On up through each grade;

We’re mighty proud

Of the record we’ve made.

So here’s to Oak Forest

Where we learn the way;

To be finer boys and girls

At work or at play.

Good for you! Where did you find it? I thank you so much for posting it. Janne and I will sing it in Hawaii in a few weeks over a Margarita, Janne doesn't drink, but I LOVE them.

I attended the Oak Forest 50th celebration in 2000 and received a brochure that had comments from former students, former principals and the school song. What a fun time that was!!

I did not know Oak Forest had a 50th Anniversary but that would have been fun to attend. To this day I still remember the first two versus of that song. I believe Ms. LaCrone wrote it.
