Jan Barnes (Nimtz)

Hilda, try Googling "Sicilian stuffed bread" and you will come up with all kinds of recipes from all different areas of Sicily. I did not find the name of Benny's bread but there are many similar recipes called scacciata (scacce), umbulata, pane cunzato, etc. If you make any of them let us know how it turns out. And of course, post pictures!

Thanks, Benny for the clarification and Jan for the suggestions.  I'm retiring this summer and, after 35 years of preschool director's day to day craziness, will need hobbies to sustain me.  Sounds like this type of cooking is guaranteed to give me a stretch in creativity (around the waist also!).

Ok, I knew I would be replaced by the Internet sooner or later. Here' another great recipe from the internet. Google sicilian stuffed artichokes, very similar to what Kay makes. This is all making me hungary and I am stuck up here in Newark, Ohio for 6 months adjusting insurance claims 10 hours a day, six days a week without a stock pot or even a way to steam arthichokes

Don't mean to brag, but so proud of our grandson, David who is a freshman at Ouachita Baptist on tennis scholarship made the President's list with all A's for the Fall senester. How's that for one of the longest run on sentences you've ever read. He must have got his scholastic aptitude from his grandmother.

Sounds like the perfect occasion and grandson to brag on Benny, I sure would. Please tell him congratulations!

Congratulations to David!  You have to brag about that, Benny.  Going to college is tough enough.  Playing tennis and travelling is probably fun, but a lot of work.  I play a lot of league tennis and we are all working on our fitness and game.  I am always exhausted and I know it is not much compared to what he does everyday along with studying and going to class.  Student athletes have my total respect!

Does anyone have contact info for James (Jimmy) Cunningham. He married Beth Holcombe, class of 66. Also looking for Margaret McAnnally. She married Timmy Bell, class of 64. Kay and I are planning our 50th wedding anniversary party and would like to invite them because they both were in our wedding party.

Larry Laird died last - I saw the obit in the Chronicle. His mother and mine worked together for several years at Moncrief-Lenoir. OI hadn't seen him since 10th grade, when his mother left Moncrief.

Suzie May Cunningham knows more about our class than anyone, Benny.  Message her and she is the pro at locating lost classmates.

I did let Jim &Beth's daughter know that you were looking for him, Benny.  I don't have direct contact info, sorry.  I am sure Jacquie will let him know.  If you want to send me your contact info, I can pass that along through her too.

Fred, Thanks for posting the link to Larry's obituary. However I think the part about his graduating from Spring Branch HS in 1962 is in error. My fondest memories of Larry were of his much younger years. We attended elementary parochial school together in the Heights for a few years and I remember at the time that his family lived on Heights Blvd. If I can come up with one of my old elementary school class photos I will post it.

Jan, let me solve the mystery for you. Larry started high school at Spring Branch in 1962, then transferred to Waltrip before moving to CA.
Suzie, I got Jim's contact info from Suzie May. We talked for over 2 hours on the phone last night I have been looking for him for 45 years. It sure was great to talk to him and Beth. They will celebrate their 50th in October.

Susan (Suzi) Smith (McMillian)

So glad you caught up with him.  They were our Garden Oaks neighbors for years, and our kids went to school together ( 5 more Waltrip alumni between us).  They married a year after us ( I thought it was December) and we attended the wedding.  Super family.  We miss seeing them. Hope you guys stay in touch.  Old friends are gold!

Thanks, Benny, for the treasured family recipes.  I've passed it along to some cousins of Sicilian descent and we are talking about trying it ourselves.

Yes Suzi you are correct. They were married in Dec. They are having their celebration in October.

Who would have guessed 50 years ago that handsome young Benny Carbo would be supplying us with wonderful Italian recipes that some of us will probably pass on to our own kids?  Life has taken us a long way."The Class of 65" is worthy of a book--maybe even a movie!

Pat, If anyone can write a book on the Class of '65, Ben certainly has the skills.  He has written several pieces about his time in Viet Nam and as Officer Carbo on HPD.  He could take a few stories from WHS65 and develop them into a bestseller.  Who knows? We might become a mini-series from Netflix or Amazon.  jbiggs
