Stephen Ray Puckett
In recent years I often will wake up in the middle of the night and be awake for 1-3 hours, then go back to sleep. I read that this 'bimodal' sleep pattern was common before the industrial revolution: http://www.doctorsreview.com/history/long-and-short-bimodal-sleep/
Occasionally I have had insomnia so made sure:
- no physical exercise within 6 hours of my target sleep time. With sex, your mileage may vary.
- little or no protein in the evening. No heavy and/or greasy meals in the evening. No tons of sweets or booze.
- no thrilling movies or books before the sleep time.
- drink fluids early in the evening (less waking up to go the bathroom).
- if need be, I take melantonin 1.5mg. If really bad (or have had a big meal), I take HTTP 100mg.
For the last 30+ years I was on call 24/7 and often had to deal with emergencies in evenings and nights, often with tight deadlines. Now that I've been retired for a year, I have noticed less of the sleep problems - no surprise there!
Some folks take diphenhydramine (Benadryl, etc.). There are side effects. I don't use it.
Hope any of this helps.
