OMG. How strange! Just last night I was cleaning off my desk and picked up a thank-you card that Robby had sent me in response to a get-well card that I sent him.

He wrote: "Thanks for your kind thoughts and prayers. It's very much appreciated."

And then to find out that Robby died last night. Wow! He was a really neat guy.

God bless Robbie's family as they remember him.  He is a bright spot in my memories, especially at Black Junior High.  We were in the same homeroom and he was always smiling, always kind, and always a lot of fun to be around.  People don't change and I certainly enjoyed visiting with him and his wife at our 50th and seeing Larry and Robbie together for a few minutes.  That's a great memory!

So saddened to hear this.  We were best friends early on, he spent many nights at our house.  I remember how good he was on the playing field at Oak Forest.  We played this game using a soccer ball to roll on the ground and kick it, then run the bases.  He was the best.  His smile will not be forgotten.

Didn't know Tim, but I did know Robbie, probably because he wanted his presence known...great guy, too early. We seem to be in that age league of being or seeing our dear friends depart.

Thanks Kay.  I was just going to comment on that.  So many of our cherished school friends are going to that "Big Home Room in the Sky" these days.  What's the big rush??  How about if we make a rule that nobody else can leave without a Hall Pass.  We'll have Stephen Puckett be the HP Administrator.  I trust him to not issue any passes except on even numbered years that are evenly divisible by 13.  Anyone caught sneeking out early will be immediately sent to the Principal's Office.  They're up there too, ya know.

I am so glad that Robby was able to attend our 50 year reunion. He loved being among friends that had shared so much of his life.  He fought valiently but sadly lost the battle against cancer.  Robby's wfie, Debbe, has been unbelieveable; she was there to comfort and help him  throughout the last few years.  Information about his funeral will be posted as soom as they are confirmed. I feel sure that you join me in remembering Robby's smile and positive outlook.  He was a friend to all, and we will always remember him.

I too am saddened to learn of the passing of Robby.  We had coresponded during the past months.  He was a great guy, and I remember him from Black and Oak Forest.  He was a really great guy who will be missed by all who knew him.  As we grieve his loss, remember that he is in a better place.

My prayers will be with his family and all of his friends.

Robbie had the greatest smile....and such a wonderful, sweet personality. I remember gettting a great big bear hug from him at the 50th reunion. He was always so warm and friendly...a real treasure in my memory book.

Aahh, yes, thanks Robin, for having the perfect phrase to
describe Robbie Colmenares.. "He was a treasure in my
memory book." Yes, exactly.... a very much taken for
granted treasure.... I barely knew the guy, yet I will always
remember his friendliness, his smile, his gorgeous eyes, and
how he almost had to twirl down the hallways as he was talking
to so many people at once.  Such a cool guy.    I once had
a crush on him, as I'm sure many of the girls did... no-one
didn't like Robbie. This is very sad, indeed....

Everyone who ever met Robbie counted him as a friend. For he befriended everyone he met and treated all like they were his best friend. Robie would light up your day just by being in his presence. Our loss is truly heaven's gain.

Robbie was a friend to all. I remember his bright eyes and warm smile. We are all lucky to be blessed with so many friends from our days in school no matter when we met.

He will soar with the angels.

Carrol Johnson.... wow, that was a lotta research!
Thanks, for all those "Find a Grave" and death notices...
Yes, some may find it uncomfortable, but I was just
fascinated.... and I think people want to be remembered.
Of course, now, I have a million more questions... :)
but will save that for another day..

Every single person has mentioned how friendly Robbie was and what a great smile he had.  Those are my memories, too.  What a wonderful tribute.  Wouldn't we all want to be remembered that way.

Barbara Curry (Hanvey)

I want to tell y'all about the Esophageal Cancer Robby died of.  You see, I have Barrets Esophagus which is the precursor of Robbie's cancer.  Back in 2000, I read a newspaper article about heartburn.  It scared me into making an appt with a gastroenterologist about my frequent heartburn (MUCH greater than 4+ times a week!).

You see, acid from the stomach CHANGES the tissue in the esophagus...quite often to the precursor of Esophageal cancer.  Everyone who dies of Esophageal cancer, started with Barrets, and must not have started treatment soon enough.  Former Governor Ann Richards died of esophageal cancer.  She had smoked, yes, but the news always said she was a hard living Texan...maybe beer, BBQ, etc...all heartburn causes.

So, I'm telling you this in case some of you dismiss frequent heartburn...please don't.

Barbara,

Thank you so much of the explaination of what Robbie died of.  I'll address this the next time I am at the doctor's office as he has me on an acid reflux medication and I have had to just step away from spicey foods.

Love to you

Joanna

Lindy Clarke (Hall)

Thanks, Barbara...  didn't know any of that.
Heartburn is something I never considered much.
Sometimes frequent, most times not.
But I will now pay more attention.
I have a cousin that recently almost died from
pneumonia.... another thing we've all had, but often
shrug off or self-medicate..
She was a healthy singer-guitar-player, 2-3 weeks ago
she almost died, and is now walking around 24/7 with
an oxygen tank. She can't sing now.
We really need to wipe those shopping carts down
with those antiseptic wipes. You just never know.

Has anyone had insomnia, and how did you deal with it?

John, I had it so bad after my first fall that my doctor prescribed Trazadone which I take 300mg each night prior to going to bed.  It works great and I get  better sleep now than what I was getting prior to my accident in March of last year.  You might call your doctor and see if you can take Trazadone.

I take Zolpidem as a substitute for more expensive Ambien. At first the Zolpidem let me fall asleep soon after I went to bed but I'd awaken around four AM and then I couldn't get back to sleep! (I must be a stubborn ol' cuss!) So my doc upped the dosage a bit and now I have no problem sleeping. There are several different pharmaceutical sleep aids which your doctor might prescribe but Over the counter Melatonin is a lot cheaper and it works for my husband.

A friend of mine said that her doctor told her, "No TV after eight o'clock. There's a tremendous amount of light put out by a television set and you don't get the effect of twilight when the light slowly dims to tell the body to prepare to sleep." She replied to him that the good TV shows come on at eight so he told her just to watch the earlier News and not to watch TV after nine o'clock. She tried that and it took awhile for her to settle into the routine but it worked for her. She thought that the combination of the glare from the TV and the nightly News, which rarely is uplifting, had been her problem.

Or just plan to reincarnate as a cat. They spend eighteen hours of every day asleep!!

Please do not take Ambien.  My husband took it for 2 weeks last year.  He had a terrible reaction and passed away.  Read about it.  I'm sure it probably helps some people, but it's not worth taking a chance.  After what I've read about it, I can't understand why doctors prescribe it.
