Need to ask the Brandts (Gary, Ben or Randy)... their grandfather owned all the land which had the stables, where I had my horse, behind what became a small strip center facing 34th, where the surf shop was/is.. I do not recall a bar being there. But Brandt's Auto Shop faced Ella, the Bray family (Linda & Freddie) lived in a little white house kinda facing Ella.... I "almost" remember a tiny bar there, but might be the power of suggestion.
The Brandts would know.

As I recall Salvaggio's became Snooty Fox, then something else.

Roy Head was great!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BLQgQNuN-M

Roy Head used to come by the radio station whenever he had a new song or album to push.  We'd always do an interview and then meet up for a beer or three.  Really nice guy and had one of the best voices in the entire industry.   With that voice, great looks and lightning stage presence, he could have gone as far in music as almost anybody.  But there was never a niche to fit his versatility and those goofy small record labels cost him precious airplay at the major market stations.  Better management wouldn't have hurt either.

My sister married his cousin.

I was Roy Head's banker when he opened the Branding Iron Salon in Porter, TX. Yes, nice guy...great talent.

At least Roy passed his talent on to his son Sundance!

Hey, Roger.  Do you still have those large strong forearms?  I asked you about it in high school and you said that you didn't get them from lifting weights (either bodybuilding or power lifting), but rather from using a whip.  Remember?

I spent a lot of time at Brandt's Garage watching Ben work on his car, like a '40 Ford as I recall. Then watched him drive it a time or two at the Dickinson drag strip, much to my mother's dismmay!
Are any of those guys still around??

Wow, John, you have a memory like a flashdrive.  You remember me and my old 14' bull whip.  I used to practice with that thing every day.  Got to where I could pop a grasshopper off a leaf with that loud "CRACK" with ease.  The grasshoppers didn't appreciate my talent, though. But it did build rock hard muscle in my forearms.  Not mass like Popeye.  Just solid and it's that way to this day even though I haven't touched a bull whip in over 50 years.  Trust me, John, when you're 70, you really appreciate any part of you that you can still call hard.

Ben Brandt is listed in the Class of 1966. I'm sad to say Ben passed in 2007. His obituary from the 66 site -

BEN EDWARD BRANDT, age 59, passed away May 14,2007 after a short battle with cancer. Ben was born in Houston, Texas to Ned and Anna Lou Brandt. He graduated from Waltrip High School and attended Panola Junior College on a basketball scholarship. He was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his son, Shawn Kinsler; mother, Anna Lou Brandt; sister, Tommie Sheppard and husband Tom; niece, Mandie Hill and husband Jason, and nephews, Blake and Brandon Sheppard. A memorial service was held at Earthman Resthaven Chapel, 13102 North Freeway on Saturday, May 19, 2007.

Sad to learn that Ben passed away. I dated him my senior year and still have pictures from prom tucked away in a scrapbook. We saw each other during that summer before I went to college but not again after that. Having lost an adult son myself, I have great empathy for what his mom must have experienced.

Tommy, my daddy used to go to a bar on 34th - over the years it was LaKay's and LaFay's. That's all I remember. My mom always knew where to find him. ;-)

I met Marsha Kriedner at Black. Her and I became friends for many years. She actually was my Matron of honor at my 1st wedding. I know she is flying with the angels and has no more pain.

Hi, Robbie,  Good to hear from you. About to go to the club for 4th of July picnic.  Fireworks tomorrow night.  4th of July parade tomorrow.  Are your kids coming to town?  Ours are coming tomorrow for the fireworks.  Haven't been playing much golf--toooo hot.  I've been playing lots of cards and dominoes.  Won $8 at dominoes today.  Chris and Erin are coming with their 2 babies--Emily and Andrew--our GREAT GRANDCHILDEN.  Clint and Liz have moved into their new house on 3rd St. in  Austin and love it.  He can still walk to downtown where his office is located.  Did I tell you that he left Strasburger and has teamed up with some friends from UT to form his own law firm.  So far, so good as far as money is concerned.  Much less pressure, too.  Has Fran started water aerobics?  I've been at it for 3 weeks.  They have extended the classes to 4 days a week due to the large number of ladies participating.  Been watching the Astros.  What fun!  Do you thinks we have a stab at the World Series?  Loved beating the pants off New York last night.  Have a happy 4th and love to Fran and family.  Carol

I just read on Facebook that one of our Waltrip classmates ('65), Natasha Klock Hobart, passed away today. I do remember her quite well. She had been living in Granbury. May she rest in peace.

I started a project a few months ago to identify all Waltrip classmates who have been Killed In Action while serving the the US military. To date, I have identified seven. On October 20th, 2017 at the ribbon cutting ceremony, I will be presenting a plaque to the school with the names on it. I am trying to identify what class Billy Lee Tobias was in. He was born in 1947 so he should have been Class of '65. I think he may have dropped out before graduation to join the Army. If anyone remembers him please contact me ASAP. Here are the names I have so far:

Robert Alan Johnson         '63       Kia Viet Nam 1967

Johnny Glen Gregg           '65       KIA Viet Nam 1968

Stephen Herman Lewis     '65       KIA Viet Nam 1968

Michael David Carroll        '67       KIA Viet Nam 1968

Billy Lee Tobias                 ' ?        KIA Viet Nam 1967

Troy Orion Coker              '68        KIA Viet Nam 1969

Thomas Anthony Sony     '69        KIA Viet Nam 1971

If possible, please come to the ceremony.

I believe Toby Tobias was either in the class of 64 or 66. I'm not sure if he dropped out or not. Does anyone else know?

Does anybody remember Douglas Wayne Hillin? He was born Sep 18 1948 - KIA in 1968. I need to know if he attended Waltrip and if so, what class.

Heres a pic of Billy Tobias, great idea to put the names of KIA in Nam. Steve Lewis was a friend of mine and died at Khe Sanh, a terrible battle. I spent a year over there in the Air Force. Want to help on the project to get names and wish i could be there at the day the names on placed at our old Waltrip.

Billy Tobias lived directly behind our house at 1229 Wakefield (before we moved to 1339 Wakefield and then bought a house at 5210 Poinciana). Billy had some siblings, but I don't recall their names. He was always a sweet guy, but he never did play with the other kids on Wakefield (April Sorrell, Lane Roquemore, the Swayzes, the Bradleys, and Roger-something). He was ALWAYS friendly.... I didn't know he died in VietNam..... damn.
