Well said Arletta. Many from our class on Facebook have differnt views also. We have healthy discussions. I also remember Ed Cearly and Ricky Johnson. Ricky was in our homeroom at Black Junior High, He was such a nice, friendly person. Wasn't Ed band drum major at Waltrip?

Hey, Happy Birthday Dorothy!  A good lookin' hunk 'o woman if ever there was.

Great post Arletta.  Actually, I was thinking of becomming a Liberal Conservative.  That's someone who, with a straight face and no fingers crossed, can babble and scream incredible whoppers for hours to explain how all this mess is the fault of a guy who never held a public office... all while enthusiastically encouraging all opinions to be heard as long as they agree with mine.

Do you remember the syndicated column,"Hints From Helloise"?  My mother was an avid reader of her column and was always trying out her solutions for household challenges.  Well, I have just started "Hints from Ben, Just for Men" and you are the first to read it right here on the Waltrip Message Forum.

Men, do you suffer from anxiety everytime your wife asks you to retreive something from the top shelf of her closet.  Knowing that every closet in the house is hers , but one, you inquire which closet and she replies, "the front bedroom closet".  While that narrows it down, you are still faced with the delima of which front bedroom closet.  So, rather than ask any more questions you go in search of the item from one of the two front bedroom closets.  Later, wifey asks you to retrieve an item from the closet in the garage, but alas, there are two closets in the garage.

At this point you have an epiphany.  You will print out labels for all of the closets in the adobe and tape them to the all of the closet doors.  Now when wifey asks you to retrieve something from a closet all she has to do is use the proper nomenclature and you will know exactly where to go.

I actually posted two of these to the closets in the garage before Kay discovered my handiwork and advised me that there would be no more signs posted.  Well, I guess I have a long way to go before I acheive Heloise fame, but you can't fault a fellow for trying to be helpful around the house...or maybe you can in my case.

Benny, I have a husband that totally understands what you are saying.  I cannot reach the top shelf but it doesn't stop me from throwing something on it for me to later hound him for help.  Hence, the short step ladder was invented just for women who don't have guys around to help them out.  Love your post.

Hey Ben, I remember that column very well.  Helloise had some terrific hints and ideas.  That's where I learned how to get gum out of my sisters hair with a Coleman stove.

Your new Ben's Gems for Mens column is a stroke of genius.  Been married for 41 years and I'm still clueless sometimes.  Like, the other day I was in Pennys at the Mall and, as I was walking by, the girl behind one of the counters squirted me with White Diamonds perfume when she meant to demo Polo.  So, Beverly started to do the laundry this morning and now she's packing her suitcase.  Not buying my story one bit.  Any advice could be a lifesaver....

My column was inteneded "just for men", but in your case Joanna I will make an exception. Mature women do not chase dogs and they certainly have no business climbing latters of any type.
As far you are concerned Roger, I have only been married for 50 years and am not yet fully qualified to offer any advise for your delima except to stay away from the cosmetics dpartment. A safer place to kill time is at your neighborhood Home Depot.

Ben and Roger you guys obviously don't get the simple solution. You have to read your wife's mind! You both need to take a Remedial Mind Reading For Husbands course. It will help you immensely.I have taken it several times. They asked me to not come back because I'm wasting their time and mine.

Dorothy, yes Ed was the drum major at Waltrip. If I'm not mistaken he was in the Longhorn Band at UT.

Helpful Hints from Heloise still appears in the Chronicle in the same section as the comics. It is written now by Heloise's daugther.

Everyone have a great weekend,

Rich

Benny, I use to be that gal that hung in the paint department of Home Depot as in the past two years at Lowe's.  Not to mention that I was last year cutting my own 2 acres with my own riding lawn mower.  However, I sympathise with men having to wait on women.  I have been wheel chair bound since March due to an accident and my husband is the chief bottle washer, cook, and everything else I would generally do.  Thank goodness for men and their never complaining about helping their wives - love you all.  My only complaint is I cannot get my bedroom painted and I'm not about to start to try while in my new two wheeler chair.  Keep the fun going.

Oh, Benny, I failed to tell you that I am in a wheel chair due to chaising a dog.  Little fart I call Hot Rod.

Ed was indeed in the Longhorn Band with me our 1st year. I had to work in subsequent years so was not in the band except during the summer for concerts.  I don't recall what Ed did after the 1st year - I don't see him in subsequent UT yearbooks. Here's his band & freshman photos from that 1st year.

Ed Cearley attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas for at least one year.  He was not in our freshman class.  I looked in my yearbook and he came in 1967 as a sophmore.  He had lots of friends there  and pledged Phi Delta Theta, but I think he transferred our junior year.  He was always a fireball of enthusiasm!

Why does it stick with me that after college Ed went into the radio business such as KISS FM in Houston?  Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Ed was emcee at our 20th reunion in 1985 - he did a great job.  He was working at KILT at the time, in radio sales, marketing and management.  Per his obits in the In Memory section, he later was at KYKX Tyler-Longview TX and then WTOT/WJAQ in Marianna, FL. The obit also says he graduated from UT in 1969.

Joanna, I did know that you fell while chasing your beloved "Hot Rod" back in March because you told Kay and I of your regrets for not being able to attend our Anniversary Dinner.  But you made light of the injury at the time saying you were going to have to use a walker for a few months.  When I went to your profile, I found out that you have had surgery and are confined to a wheel chair.  Kay and I are praying for a speedy recovery so that you can get back on that mower and paint that bedroom.  Say hello to Roger when you go to Home Depot, but don't spray him with White Shoulders.  He is already in enough trouble.

Ed Cearley married my best friend in high school, Sue Shivers.  We married in March of '69 and they were at our wedding in Waco - she was one of my bridesmaids.  Then they married in June of '69 and I was one of her bridesmaids.  We visited them once in Houston- we were in Dallas. Later on, I found out they divorced and found Ed and talked to him. He had bought a radio station in Tyler and was living there.  Then I found out shortly after that he had died.  He was such a great guy!!

Thanks for the copy of the Stevens School Song Stephen.  Makes me want to gather up the group that was in Ms Engberg's class when she wrote the song and go sing it for the current students of Lulu M Stevens, Not.

Benny, thanks for the prayers.  It has been a really rough go.  I went from okay to worse hence the wheel chair.  We keep I30 from our house to Dallas busy with doctors and specialists.  I don't know what I would have done without such a great husband.  Lots of tears between the two of us and help from prayers from our church.  I have been trying to schedule a possible meet w/lunch with Jeanne Spencer who now lives in Rowlett but by the time I get to the hospitals and doctors' offices, I'm worn out.  My daughter lives in Dallas but she does not come out to visit - she just keeps me busy making baby blankets for all her friends.  Son lives in the Woodlands and he and his wife are so busy I don't bother them very much.  I guess this is what you get when you move to the far corners of the state.  James Jarvis and his wife have a ranch in Cumby which is about 20 minutes away and he calls me from time to time to check in - I cannot wait to see the ranch.

Our prayers are with you, too, Joanna.  That amazing bod of yours might be in a slump but your mind is sharp as ever.  Having the body of an Olympic athlete doesn't mean much if there's a vacuum between the ears.

Besides, I know being in a wheelchair isn't ideal but at least you have some degree of mobility and I'd bet you feel more at ease with that wheelchair  than if you had to get around on a skateboard...right?

The human body often has amazing power to heal itself and I hope that you get back on your two lovely feet soon.  If you do, then maybe you and I can go a few rounds of cage wrestling at the next reunion...whatcha say?

08/08/16 02:20 PM #2041

Joanna Hinton (Garrett)

Thanks, Roger for the support.  I think the hardest thing is just not being able to jump and run and help our around my house.  Living in the country brings dusty like you would not believe and I struggle with not having things clean and orderly.  I went for tests Saturday of last week in Dallas and they are trying to see if there is a group of nerves that may have to be surgically divided or if there may be a case of a tumor that may need to be operated on.  But, hey, if I'm at the next reunion - you are on - cage and all and we can draw a crowd - right.

Your well wishes are greatly appreciated in more ways than you can imagine.

Joanna

Joanna, praying that you will heal quickly. When you are an active person, it is very hard to be sidelined.

Arletta Parnell (Glankler)

Hi Joanna,

Well honey, guess what?  It is no fun having to sit in that chair.  I do have one thing to say.  It is time to let hubby help you for a change. It is amazing what they all of a sudden can do. LOL!  I, due to degenerative disk disease in my back, have shrunk to 5 ft from 5'3".  I don't stand up real straight a lot of the time either, and I have to sit more than stand to relieve the pain in my back.  But God gave me a hubby who is 6'4" tall, and he has always been taken care of by me.  He could not even boil water.  Well, he is learning to cook really well, and never ceases to amaze me when he says, "Damn honey, I sure have been one lazy husband for 35 years.  I never realized you did all this chit after working all day."  Is there anything I can get you now?  Of course he did all the outside work, yard, pool etc.  He just never realized all the inside stuff to do.  My kids are spread out as well.  Only 1 daughter lives near me in Memphis.  She is in Houston right now taking care of my youngest daughter going through her next bout of cancer.  My computer is my saviour.  I run online card tournaments in a game called Euchre, and do digital art pages for the tournament directors. Here are 2 samples.  http://angelwolfdesigns.com/AtepaFala/Rock%20On/RockOn.html  and  http://angelwolfdesigns.com/CHRISTMAS/MerryChristmas/MerryChristmas.html

You will have to copy and paste into your browser.  I create all my own backgrounds, glitters, posers, etc.  It is fun and relaxing. My artist nic is Atepa_Fala.  I will eventually be in a wheelchair all the time.  But Chuck says I will have mine souped up with a 409.  Just kidding.

I will pray they get you all fixed up, and if not, send you my ideas on a souped up 409 wheel chair.  LOL!!!

Keep smiling because yours is just too pretty not to.  God has it all in his hands his way.

Hugs,

Arletta

Arletta, you are so talented.  I checked out both of your websites - WOW!!!!!  You far surpass me - all I can do is knit and crochet.  I left you a message on your Waltrip page.  Thanks for your love and prayers and I've kept you in mind every since you could not make the reunion and about your daughter.  I hope all goes well with her and having a family member help her out is wonderful.

I'll keep everyone abreast of what happens to me.  If you do get plans for a 409, make sure you incorporate that 5spd on the floor (cement) to make it go.

Love to you

Joanna
